Sporopollenin is a highly durable, chemically inert biopolymer that forms the outer layer of spores and pollen grains in plants, algae, and some fungi. It is considered one of the most resistant organic materials known in nature.
Location: Found in the exine (outer wall) of pollen grains and spores.
Function:
- Protects reproductive cells from UV radiation, enzymes, microbes, and harsh environmental conditions (e.g., desiccation, oxidation).
- Enables long-term survival and dispersal of pollen/spores.

Chemical Composition:
- Complex and not fully defined, but includes long-chain fatty acids, phenylpropanoids, and phenolic compounds cross-linked by ether and ester bonds.
- Remarkably chemically stable—resistant to acids, bases, and solvents.

Biological Significance:
- Essential for plant reproduction, especially for terrestrial plants.
- Its resistance allows fossil pollen to persist for millions of years, making it valuable for paleobotany and climate research.
